Pace of Play is one of my biggest gripes. When the pace is slow I get really frustrated and make more lousy shots.
I hope you have some good tips about how to handle PoP when it comes to a crawl.

I have issues with folks behind me attempting to rush or push my group when if they would just look, they would see the problem is being caused somewhere ahead of us.
I think that course's should have red Call Boxes at every tee so that you can call the club house and ask for a Marshall. <-- You heard it here 1st folks.

Thanks to Ace and Al for initiating the new Mr. Golf Etiquette Blog. Pace of Play is one of the reasons that a lot of people leave the game of golf (slow pace of play, that is). And Ace nailed it on the head when he said that the frustration of slow play causes us to make bad shots. (In fact that is one of my best excuses for bad shots!)
But here are a few tips that I hope will help to keep the pace moving along:
1. Know your game; play the appropriate tees.
2. Play ready golf; plan your shots in advance.
3. Limit practice swings; eliminate practice shots.
4. Place clubs near exit of green; complete scorecard on next tee.
5. When carts must remain on path; bring a variety of clubs to your lie.
6. Remember, golf balls don't float (so don’t spend a lot of time looking for them after you see a splash)

What is the right approach when a slow group in front of you doesn't offer to let you play through? Or the other thing I see is they know they should let your group play through but they make statements like 'well the problem is ahead of us..'...

Harvey asks one of the most important questions regarding playing through: “What’s the right way to approach a slow group?”
The first thing to do is make sure there is room ahead in which to play through. As you note, Harvey, sometimes they say the problem is up ahead – sometimes true, sometimes not. But be sure before you make a bad situation worse. Nothing will put your game off faster than getting into a confrontation with another group (even slow play isn’t as distracting as that).
After you have determined that there is enough room to play through, the proper thing to do is to approach the slow players in a friendly way, without making the group ahead feel threatened or insulted. If you can get a word in to them (for instance if you have a cart) you can ask if they’ll let you play through at the green or on the next tee. If they agree, then after they hit to the green they can mark their balls and wait for you to hit up. You can putt out and move ahead. That would be easy enough.
Or if they prefer to putt out first, they can do so, then go to the next tee and hit while you are putting then you can hit and move ahead there.
There are lots of ways to do it so no one is either ticked off or insulted. The most important key is in how you ask for their cooperation. If you start out rude, they will likely resist. If you are friendly, most groups will be fine with someone playing through.
If they are really slow and will not let you play through, your best option is to notify a ranger when you see one. Some people will just go around them and then complain to a ranger later, but that way you lose out on part of your round, so that is not the best option.
Keep it friendly and you’ll be surprised at how nice other golfers can be!

I'd like to change the topic. I would rather endure slow play than see BAD etiquette (i.e. ball marks unrepaired, divots not filled in, bunker rakes) . .. Hey wait a minute? Bunkers are hazards right?
2 points I'd like to pose...
1) If we do rake bunkers rakes should be in bunker to avoid deflecting ball into bunker. or do you leave them out of bunker to attepmt to deflect into bunker... I was always taught rakes left in bunkers.
2) I am a proponent of no rakes.. bunkers are hazards and should be left alone....

This month, April, 2007 is the 11th anniversary of the Mr. Golf Etiquette web site (Yippee!). And the topic of where to put the rakes has been raging since the beginning. And like your note above, it is not an opinion that is held lightly. Do they get left in the bunker? Or do they get placed outside the bunker? Inquiring minds want to know...
Wait – first a little background. If the rake goes outside the bunker, the fear, as noted above, is that the rake will prevent a ball from going into a bunker when it would have rolled in there on its own. However, the flip side of that argument is that if the rake is in the bunker it could prevent a ball from rolling to where it would have rolled within the bunker; plus, if the ball rolls against the rake, it leaves a messy situation for removing the rake without moving the ball. (It’s true that the rules allow for dealing with movable obstructions, but in the bunker, it’s tricky because of replacing it exactly how it was situated in the sand.)
Obviously, both sides present some difficult challenges. What’s a golfer to do?
So, okay, here it is: after a lot of research, interviews and observation, here is the bottom line on where to put rakes after you have dutifully raked the bunker. According to the USGA, the proper place to put the rakes is outside the bunkers with the rake handles running parallel to the fairway. It is true that the rake can prevent the ball from rolling into a bunker. But it can also prevent a ball from rolling to it’s natural resting place within the bunker. But the USGA has decided, and Mr. Golf Etiquette agrees (not that the USGA cares about that), the rakes go outside the bunkers.
When the PGA Championship was played at Sahalee in 1998 Mr. Golf Etiquette called the pro at the club and asked where they put their rakes. The response was the rakes were kept, “in the bunkers.” But during the actual event (same was true in the NEC in 2002), which Mr. Golf Etiquette attended, the rakes were all OUTSIDE THE BUNKERS. Because it was a PGA event, their rules applied, not the local rules.
Very often the rakes are kept in the bunkers because it is easier for the grounds crew to mow if they don’t have to get down and move the rakes. But that is not a standard by which this issue should be decided. It is based on what is good for the game. Next time you attend an event, check to see where they keep the rakes.
Placed outside the bunker, with handles parallel to fairways, the rake will be the least intrusive. That is where they should go.

What is the best way to let a group play through without slowing down play even further? I find that some golfers do not how to let others play through. Most groups not familiar with the concept believe that in order to let a faster group play through they must stop play completely to allow a faster group behind to play the hole ahead. This tends to compound the problem of slow play even furhter.The tendency is to wait until the faster group behind catches up to allow them to play through. In reality with this type of thinking the group behind will never catch up. The easiest and best way to allow a faster group to play through is to identify when you have a group behind you that is waiting on each tee to take their next shot. Once you identify that the group behind plays at a faster pace, wave them on. Either at the tee or on the fairway. and play up on a hole together. Have the faster group putt out first and move on to the next tee while the slower group chips on or putts out. That way the slower group is ready on the next tee as soon as the faster group has moved on ahead.

I am a beginner, but my husband is a very good golfer, (he's been playing for a while).
We only go out to play after 4:30 on the weekends and usually just play 9. He says that I have to do that before I can play DAY golf. He says that the people are much more easy-going at night and that they are mostly there for the fun of it.
My problem is when you get paired up with a really unruly person who is constantly making wise-cracks about my swing or clearly making visible signs that he thinks I'm too slow. Like this weekend, the other golfer was just unforgiving of any mistake I made. He was extremely rude and crude.
I was so shook that I just stopped playing the round and rode in the chart for the rest of the round with my husband.
I wanted to report him, but my husband said that the club would not do anything.
Can you give me some advice on how to handle insensitive people like that? Even the best golfers were beginners! I really want to hear your thoughts. Thanks
i was golfing in a 4some over the weekend. we were gambling a little. my partner really screwed up a par 3. he was putting for triple bogey, when i gave him a putt! his ball was in the line of our opponent. he doesnt play golf nearly as much as i do. he putted out even though he was out of the hole. giving our opponent an exact line of his putt. on the way back to the cart i asked him never to do that again, he screamed and pouted and acted like an ass! who is at fault here?

What is the etiquette regarding consulting with a partner regarding reading a putt. I just finished a round where my oppenents consulted about each putt for what seemed like forever. I have noticed that one of the opponents has been chided in the past by other players. They have said such things as "You two sound like two women over every putt. . .". Just how much back and forth about the read of a putt is acceptable, and what should be done when it becomes unacceptable?
